Coming soon is the season for traveling and summer vacations. While we often do lots of research to find a great travel destination, we often do not have a plan to stay healthy while we are away. These are simple ways to keep a healthy lifestyle while being away from home.

1. Drink a lot of of water

Staying hydrated is very important while traveling. Often, especially when flying long hauls, you may feel sluggish and fatigued due to dehydration. People also mistake feeling hungry when they are really just dehydrated. Keep a bottle of water handy while traveling. If you are going to an exotic location, find out in advance about the safety of drinking the tap water and then plan accordingly. If you are taking a road trip or a bike trip, always keep some water on hand.

2. Watch your diet

Be mindful of what and how much you eat. Unless you are going on a detox retreat, vacations are not a time to begin a diet. It is also not a time to go completely overboard. Enjoy the local cuisine but do not overdo it. Identify the local cuisine that you want to try and plan your eating around that. An occasional alcoholic drink is also okay, but best to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner as opposed to on an empty stomach. When it comes to food and drink, think moderation.

3. Eat plenty of fruits and veggies

One of the easiest ways to keep your eating plan in check and to avoid going overboard is to be conscious of including fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Incorporate a fruit or vegetable at each meal. Try to include a fresh fruit serving in the morning with breakfast or as a mid morning snack, and include some kind of vegetable dish with lunch or dinner. It can be a fresh salad, a cooked vegetable, or a healthy soup option.

4. Eat meals regularly

Eating structured meals is one of the best ways to keep your diet in check. Try for a healthy breakfast including some protein to keep your blood sugar in check. Yogurt with fruit, eggs with whole wheat toast, or whole grain toast and peanut butter are some good choices. Try to skip the pastries, especially in the morning. Do not skip lunch. If you are on the run, be mindful to sit down and enjoy a healthy lunch even if it is a quickie. A salad with grilled fish or tofu, a turkey sandwich, or a veggie burger is a good choice. If you want to indulge in the local cuisine, that is ok on occasion, but think portion control. And skip the fried foods. Finally, don’t go totally overboard at dinner.

5. Get active

One of the best ways to explore a new location is to walk, walk, and walk. Be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes so that you can get plenty of exercise. Other types of exercise, such as swimming and biking, are also great, especially in summer months. We have a private pool at The Leaf Jimbaran so pack your swimming gear. Regardless of what exercise you choose to do, the most important point is to incorporate it into your day and do it.

Have Yourself a Good Night’s Sleep This Holiday Season. Sleep is absolutely essential for a person’s health and well-being. Here are some tips for a good night sleep when traveling

1. Take a Relaxing Hot Bubble Bath

A bath before bed both relaxes your muscles and releases muscular tension. The process has a chemical effect on the body as well. While relaxing in the tub, your core body temperature rises, and then it quickly drops once you get out. The addition of bath oils will also add to the relaxing effect. Sandal Wood oil has a woodsy scent that has been used for centuries to prepare the mind for meditation. Flower petals can also be used to add a relaxing scent. Slip in, soak and relax…

2. Apply Food Science

Over the years, science has found that many foods, drinks, herbs, and other natural sleep aids can help put you to sleep naturally. Certain types of fish and sea creatures that contain tryptophan induce sleep, including shrimp, cod, tuna, and halibut. Consume during evening meal as one of your healthy sleep habits.

3. Use Sounds to Induce Sleep

Sound therapy has been used for thousands of years to help people relax and improve their sleep habits. Many older people with sleep problems find an improvement in their sleep after listening to relaxing music before bedtime. When music is combined with guided relaxation it increases the rate at which the mind and body combine to slow down and move into a deep trance like state. Low and slow vocal patterns are also found to be trance inducing.

4. Follow a Bedtime Routine

People with regular sleeping routines have higher concentration levels, increased energy, and a better memory. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day sets the body’s “internal clock” to expect sleep at a certain time night after night. The exact time you choose to go to bed/wake up isn’t so important, but there are a two things you need to consider are: You should be aiming for between 7 and 9 hours sleep and your body needs a decent amount of bright light every day so it can produce certain (very important) brain chemicals like melatonin.

At The Leaf Jimbaran, we provide each guest a selection of pillows according to their sleeping needs and technology such as music and sleeping software monitoring to help induce sleep….

Ecotourism is not only a way of thinking or a lifestyle- it’s a chance to experience being an organic part of nature. It means responsible travelling, preserving nature and culture. At The Leaf Jimbaran, we invite your to be part of this reforestation process. Here are some plants we will prepare for you in our organic garden.

Averrhoa carambola ‘Dwarf Maher’ (Star Fruit): Known for its sweet juicy fruit, the Dwarf Maher thrives in warm temperatures and direct sunlight.

Hylocereus undatus (Dragon Fruit): it is a climbing vine cactus species that blooms at night with beautiful, fragrant flowers. The plant produces scaly dragon fruit, which taste like a cross between a kiwi and a pear, after three to four years of growth.

Theobroma cacao (Cocoa): An evergreen tree that grows well in humid, warm climates, the theobroma cacao will yield cocoa pods full of 20 to 40 cocoa beans each in about five months.

Ananas comosus ‘Royale’ (Pineapple): this is a decorative plant whose delicious pineapple is about half the size of those commonly found in supermarkets. It requires heat, direct sunlight, and a bit of dryness between watering during its growing period.

Passiflora edulis ‘McCann’ (Passion Fruit): Native to South America, it is a vigorous plant that produces sweet oval passion fruit from early spring through fall. When growing indoors, keep in full sun, above 60 degrees, and supported with a trellis or stake.

This activity is complimentary every Monday to all villa guests.
